Getting around in Almaden Valley
While the Almaden Expressway is the principal thoroughfare in Almaden Valley, it also provides access to Highway 101, via the West Valley Freeway (Norman Y. Mineta Freeway) and to the 280 via Highway 87.
Residents have access to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail system via the Almaden Station at Winfield Blvd. and Blossom River Wy. VTA also provides bus service throughout the area and beyond.
Almaden Valley Schools
The San Jose Unified and Union School Districts serve the public school students who live here. The community is home to five elementary, two middle and one high school. The Union School District administers only one of these schools, Guadalupe Elementary.
Graystone and Williams Elementary School are ranked among the best schools in the San Jose Unified School district by SchoolDigger.com. In fact, they name Williams Elementary as the 46th best elementary school of 5,621 in the state.
In 2014, Newsweek ranked Leland High School as the 54th best high school of the 26,407 public high schools in the country in 2014. The school is a recipient of the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education.
Almaden Valley is also home to two private schools, Almaden Country School and Holy Spirit School, serving students in grades Pre-K through junior high.
Shopping, Dining and Recreation
The area is primarily a residential community but you won’t have to go far to run errands, shop and dine. Almaden Plaza, anchored by Costco, provides a variety of retail stores, eateries, and services to local residents.
Almaden Ranch is San Jose’s newest shopping destination and it’s located just over the neighborhood’s northern border.
Asian food fans will be especially fond of the dining scene here. You’ll find restaurants serving everything from sushi to Thai, Korean, Chinese and Japanese cuisine.
Finally, if you’re looking for that cozy neighborhood bar where you can pull up a stool and watch the game, you’ll find it in Almaden at Mike’s Place. Almaden’s craft beer aficionados, on the other hand, enjoy The Tap Room at Whole Foods Market.
Outdoor enthusiasts who buy a home in Almaden Valley will have a plethora of opportunities to get outside during their leisure time. Of the parks in the area, Almaden Quicksilver County Park is the largest, offering more than 4,160 acres to explore along the 37 miles of hiking trails, 30 miles of equestrian trails and more than 16 miles of bike trails. Dogs, on a leash, are welcome on all of the park’s trails.
Local anglers enjoy Almaden Lake Park – although the fish there contain high levels of mercury so it’s a catch-and-release type of shore-fishing experience. The regional park also offers plenty of trails on which to hike and bike.
The private, member-owned Almaden Golf and Country Club serve the area’s golfers and their families with a fabulous facility located in the center of the community. Aside from golf, members enjoy a packed social calendar, tennis, swimming, a fitness center and more.
Not a joiner? You’ll still love life in Almaden Valley because Cinnabar Hills Golf Club is located just over its southeast border.
Homes in Almaden Valley
While you won’t find as many homes for sale in Almaden Valley as in other, larger San Jose communities, what you will find is impressive. Townhomes, condos and single-family homes are on offer with the lowest prices attached to the former.
Home prices in Almaden Valley typically start in the $800,000s and top out at more than $5 million. Upper range homes epitomize California living. Many sit on large parcels and include Mediterranean-style estates, the newly-constructed homes in Country View Estates and custom designed stunners.
Mid-price range shoppers will find villa-style townhomes in gated communities and large contemporary homes with views, set in friendly neighborhoods.
Starter homes in Almaden Valley consist mainly of condos, but even these are typically located in million-dollar neighborhoods yet priced below that.
