Getting Around
VTA light rail serves the Penitencia Creek, McKee and Alum Rock VTA stations. The Alum Rock/Santa Clara Bus Rapid Transit Project offers slightly more than 7 miles of public transit service from Alum Rock Avenue to the Eastridge Transit Center and beyond.
Alum Rock Schools
East Side Union High School District and Alum Rock Union School District serve the public school students who live here.
Students attend various elementary schools, Joseph George or Ocala Middle School and James Lick, Mt. Pleasant and William C. Overfelt High Schools.
The highest rated school in the area is KIPP Heartwood Academy, a public charter middle school. Open to all students, the school opened in 2004 and it focuses on preparing students for college. It’s Alum Rock’s first charter school.
St. John Vianney School, a Catholic school serves students in grades K through 8.
Shopping, Dining and Recreation
The remodeled Country Club Villa Shopping Center is just a 4-minute drive from the central part of the area. Here you can shop at the pharmacy, bakery, supermarket, drop your clothes at the cleaners’ and then stop for a burger.
The farmers market is a popular venue with locals. Rain or shine, the market is open, year ‘round, on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Shop for locally-grown produce, flowers, baked goods and more. There’s also live music and various events planned throughout the year.
Outdoor enthusiasts love living so close to Alum Rock Park. One of the oldest municipal parks in California, it offers 740 acres of natural beauty. Hikers take to the 13 miles of trails, equestrians love the 6 miles of horse trails and bikers have 3 miles all to themselves. Get to the top of the park and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city.
The park is a popular site for picnics, with several picnic spots available by reservation.
Homes in Alum Rock
Home construction began in the area in the 1940s and continued in earnest throughout the following decade. Today, the community is home to nearly 4,000 homes, 61 percent of which are owner-occupied.
One of the least expensive housing markets in San Jose, Alum Rock actually has homes for sale priced less than $900,000. Most entry-level homes here, though, typically start in the mid-$900,000s.
Mid-priced homes for sale in the area generally offer three bedrooms and one or two bathrooms and from 1,000 to 1,600 square feet of living space. Many of these homes were built in the 1940s and 1950s and many have been restored.
At the top of the Alum Rock real estate market price range, you’ll find homes of a variety of ages, from the 1940s, 1960s and even the 2000s. The top price is generally around $2 million.
