Parkland

When the powers that be in Sunnyvale compiled the city’s general plan they mandated that for every 1,000 people residing in a given neighborhood, a certain number of acres of public parkland and recreational facilities must be set aside. They went a bit overboard in Sunnyvale’s Parkland neighborhood. Not that we’re complaining – on the contrary. Anchored by two of Sunnyvale’s most fabulous parks, there’s a lot to love about the Parkland neighborhood in Sunnyvale.

Parkland schools

Three elementary schools serve public school students in Parkland:

  • Braly Elementary – Located just over Parkland’s northwest border.
  • Laurelwood Elementary – Located slightly southeast of Parkland
  • Ponderosa Elementary – Located within the Parkland community.

Of the three, Laurelwood is the highest rated — 377th of California’s 5,621 public elementary schools.

Three middle schools serve Parkland students as well:

  • Columbia Middle School – Located about 15 minutes north of Parkland.
  • Marian A. Peterson Middle School – Located in the northern part of the Parkland neighborhood.
  • Sunnyvale Middle School – Located east of the neighborhood.

Although Peterson and Sunnyvale are closely ranked, Sunnyvale Middle School is ranked a bit higher — 300th of 2,472 public middle schools in California. Peterson Middle School sits at 331. In fact, Sunnyvale Middle School has shown great improvement, with students raising the standard test score more than 12 points between 2012 and 2016.

Finally, public school students in Parkland will attend either Fremont or Adrian Wilcox High Schools. Wilcox High students have shown impressive improvement over the past three years, with the average test score increasing more than 35 points.

Parents who prefer private schools for their children will find several in close proximity to Parkland. The South Peninsula Hebrew Day School, Resurrection Catholic School, and Challenger School Sunnyvale are just a 10-minute drive southwest of the neighborhood.

St. Lawrence Elementary and Middle School are located five minutes east of Parkland, Monticello Academy, a private pre-school, elementary and middle school are only five minutes away and the Raynor Campus of Stratford School is on the neighborhood’s southern border.

Shopping, dining and recreation in Parkland

Shopping and errand-running are a snap when you buy a home in Parkland. El Camino Real offers everything from auto mechanics to jewelers to dry cleaners, a dentist, grocery store, fish market, liquor store and more.

Your dining choices are vast here in Parkland. Again, El Camino Real is the area hotspot and home to bars, cafes, fast food outlets, and national chain and locally-owned eateries.

When it’s time to get outdoors, head north to Ponderosa Park where you’ll have 9 acres to explore. Play baseball, shoot some hoops, pitch horseshoes, play bocce ball or have a picnic.

South Parkland offers Raynor Park. At just less than 15 acres, it is the second largest municipal park in Sunnyvale. Raynor offers a skating rink, two ball fields, a fabulous playground for the little ones and a recreation center.

Parkland homes

Parkland offers large, California ranch-style homes and many sit on oversized lots. Built between the 1960s and 1970s you’ll typically find these homes in north Parklands, near Ponderosa Park. Head south and the homes become older (primarily built in the 1950s and 1960s), smaller and they sit on smaller lots.

There’s good news for those searching for newly constructed homes for sale in Sunnyvale. The agricultural land in the eastern section of Parkland has seen many new residences spring up and there are plans for more.

You’ll find Parkland south of Reed Ave. and north of Dunford Wy., between the Lawrence Expressway and S. Wolfe Rd.
